Phototherapy Machine

Phototherapy Machine

A phototherapy machine is a device that uses visible light to treat hyperbilirubinemia in newborns. The machine consists of an overhead lamp with fluorescent light tubes and a plexiglas shield to filter out ultraviolet radiation. The newborn is placed under the lights without clothes or just wearing a diaper. The light looks blue and is in the blue region of the spectrum from 420-500 nm. Phototherapy is needed mostly in treating infants, and jaundice happens because of excess bilirubin, which is formed when red blood cells break down. Babies, due to their physical vulnerability, do not get rid of the bilirubin, which leads to the disease and a the need for a PT machine.
Phototherapy can also be used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis due to allergies. The treatment involves using ultraviolet (UV) light to slow skin cell growth and inflammation.
